Journey to Compassion

Eddie and one of his cats

It all started with a kitten. One kitten was able to win the heart of Eddie Lama, the co-founder and Director of Oasis Sanctuary.

Prior to this connection, Eddie had wanted nothing to do with animals, except to eat them. But the bond that developed with this little furball had a profound effect on his relationship with all animals.

He experienced a change in perception and began his journey to compassion. The award-winning documentary film, The Witness, chronicles that journey from a violent past to his current life of compassion and animal consciousness.

Eddie Lama
Kitten or canine, Eddie was soon rescuing and taking in any stray that crossed his path. Living and working in New York City, that meant A LOT of critters. In no time at all, there were rescued dogs and cats living in his office and staying with friends until homes could be found. And Eddie was running out of space and friends.

That’s when he and his best friend, the late Eddie Rizzo, decided they needed a place to keep them, a safe haven where they could recover their health and confidence before being adopted into a new home. The two Eddies started looking for land in the Catskills, and found an old dairy farm. They made a deal. And on December 5, 1998, a dream became reality. Oasis Sanctuary was born.
